Gattonside Village Green

The Monks of Gattonside give cherries

House names of The Orchard, Orchard Neuk and Orchard Cottage are a link with the days when the lay brothers of Melrose cultivated here their south facing orchards. A pleasant ceremony is enacted at the village green when a resident of modern Gattonside in monks' garb invites the Melrosian to partake of cherries, the fruit of the orchard.

Boston House is a reminder of a family for 600 years resident in the village. Its reputed founder Bastoun, a French harpist with Edward's army at Bannockburn to sing the greatness of the expected English victory, found himself a prisoner with the Scots. So well did his celebration of Scotland's triumph please Bruce that he was rewarded with lands in Gattonside.
