Friday the 1st of May saw the appointment of Laing Robson as Melrosian for 1998. Laing is the 21 year old son of Ian and Sheila Robson, Fauhope, Gattonside, Melrose. He will be supported by Alasdair Fairbairn and Ian McDermott as right and left hand men.

Laing was welcomed by a large crowd in the Market Square. This was followed by a social evening in the George and Abbotsford Hotel which extended into the 'wee sma hours'.
