Melrose and District Community Council News Highlights from Meeting on 16 January 2008
Community Council · The Community Council and Traders’ Association are to work more closely for the benefit of Melrose. As well as Traders Chair Angela Dewar being a member of the Community Council, a Councillor will attend Traders’ monthly meetings. There are also close links with Melrose Festival and Melrose in Bloom. · The Traders and Community Council are developing a Welcome Pack of information for new residents. · Website (www.melrose.bordernet.co.uk) – the Community Council and Traders are to improve and keep up to date their areas of the town website. Other organisations and individuals’ contributions will be very welcome in due course · Repair work to the hole in the wall at the Cauld will be underway early in 2008. · The Council are continuing to press Scottish Borders Council to have the footpath along Annay Road between Melrose and Newstead brought up to a useable standard. · Melrose Sevens 125 – a public meeting on plans for the 7s on 10, 11, 12 April will be held on 23 January at 7pm at the Greenyards. Plans will be on show in the Ormiston Rooms on 21, 22, 23 January. · Community Events – successful Hogmanay celebrations were held in the square at midnight on 31 December. · School Parent Council is keen to become involved with Community Council, Traders and Community Events. · CC meets 3rd Wednesday in month usually in Ormiston at 7.30. All welcome. Next meeting 20th February. · Dog fouling – members of public encouraged to use pooper scoopers and to use dog waste bins provided. · Cutting of vegetation at Scaurs about to take place. · CC’s secretary is resigning due to other commitments; new secretary is needed for this important role; honorarium and expenses provided. Melrose in Bloom
· The Group is: Chair - Owen Rowlands, Duncan Bradon - Secretary, Vivien Chisholm - Treasurer and Val Miller - Fundraiser. The Group meets on 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7.30 in Ormiston Rooms and all are welcome. Projects for 2008 include liaison with Melrose Grammar School.
Melrose Traders Association
· Supply of cigarette bins being explored to keep town tidy. · Eco-friendly bags are being explored to reduce plastic bag use. · MTA meets 2nd Tuesday in month in Ormiston Rooms at 7.30 and all welcome. Next – 12 February.
