Highlights from Meeting on 20 February 2008


· Bags for Life – The New Ways Partnership will shortly distribute eco-friendly bags to independent traders throughout the Borders. Melrose Traders hopes to follow this up with its own scheme.

· The Scaurs – Scottish Borders Council has now done a major pruning of the vegetation of the Scaurs banking below the pathway along the Tweed to the rear of Tweedmount Road.

· The Cauld – major repair works to the stones at the Cauld to improve the route of the Tweed are being arranged by Scottish Borders Council from early March 2008.

· St Dunstan’s Car Park – works on white lining, drainage and surfacing will take place at weekends in March.

· Annay Road Footpath – works to tar this footpath will be undertaken in March 2008.

· Greenyards Toilets – these toilets will be reopened 7 days per week from 1 April 2008.

· Car Parking – Scottish Borders Council is preparing plans for additional car parking in Melrose and will consult the community council and wider public in spring 2008. More information after MDCC’s March meeting.

· New School Kitchen – a new school kitchen will be provided in summer 2008 to enable meals to be cooked in the school.

· School Extension – it is intended to extend the school and work is currently being discussed with parents.

· A Guidance Leaflet on street furniture and signage is being compiled by Scottish Borders Council to encourage best practice in towns.

Next Meeting of the Community Council is on Wednesday, 19 March 2008 at 7.30pm in the Ormiston Institute, Melrose. Members of the public very welcome to attend.
