The History of MelroseThe Railway Age in MelroseIt lasted only 120 years from 1849 to 1969. For most of that time the railway line was served by magnificent steam locomotives fit for the steep gradients over the Lammermuir Hills to the north, and the Cheviot Hills to the south. A legacy of the period is the splendid high Victorian railway station building, contemptuous of the riffraff of cars and lorries that use the former rail-bed. Even as late as 1962 Melrose Station won awards for its garden and was featured in Countryman Magazine. Next: Melrose Ignores the Industrial RevolutionMelrose, Scottish Borders
