Scottish Borders Common Ridings and FestivalsTaking place annually Scottish Borders Common Ridings and Festivals commemorate and celebrate historical pageant. Horses play a major part with the Riding of the Marches taking place over what was common land. Most of the celebrations take place from the beginning of June through until August with a principal being chosen from each town to lead the festivities. Each year the towns follow a set chronological order with Hawick the first, followed by West Linton, Selkirk, Melrose, Peebles, Galashiels, Jedburgh, Duns, Kelso, Lauder and Coldstream.
