Melrose and District Pipes and DrumsPipe Major James Pryde MBE
We are indeed proud and privileged to have James tutoring and giving us his wealth of experience, forming a strong foundation for the development of our Pipes and Drums. He was born in Inveresk and completed his National Service with The Royal Scots, thereafter he learned his Bagpipe making skills with Willie Sinclair in Edinburgh. He rejoined the Army and served with The Highland Light Infantry, The Seaforth Highlanders and then as Senior Pipe Major of The British Army with The Royal Scots Greys/Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. He carried Her Majesty The Queens personal Pipe Banner. James retired from Military service after 25 years in 1972, the same year his arrangement of a well known hymn from the last LP record he made with his band, hit the music charts and sold millions. The hymn was of course "Amazing Grace", and he has been associated with this music ever since. Our Honorary Pipe Major and Vice Chairperson is one of the Worlds most respected tutors and exponents of the Highland Bagpipe and its music, a Senior Judge for both Solo playing and Pipe Band competitions around the World and a skilled Bagpipe maker.
