Hosts Melrose crashed out of the Sevens after throwing away a 26-14 lead mid-way through the second half. Melrose conceded a try in the last minute or playing time, and then lost out to Keith Davidsonís extra-time try.
In a thrilling first half, Melrose fought back from 14-0 down to lead 21-14 at the interval. First Alister Stevenson touched down and Colin Turnball, before Keith Davidson broke clear to score, and convert.
However, Melrose fought back, and Rutherford reduced the deficit with a try converted by Scott Ruthven, before David Graham touched after a break by Scott Ruthven, and Derrick Bain converted. Alec Clark gave Melrose the lead for the first time as he rounded the Hawick defence to score, and Scott Ruthven converted.
Clark extended his sides lead with a second try early in the second half, before Hawick fought back and Neil Douglas went into the corner. Hawick levelled the scores in the last minute to send the tie into extra time. Donald Hughes took advantage of some poor Melrose tackling to touch down, and Davidson converted.
Davidson stole the tie for Hawick in extra-time, breaking clear from the kick-off.
