Corn Mill
The Abbey Mill shop sits on the site of the Abbey corn mill. The mill for the Abbey was built beside a lade, which diverted water from the River Tweed to power the mill wheel. The lower half of the corn mill was built in 1640 on the site of an earlier mill that provided the Abbey's bakehouse with flour. The bread baked in the bakehouse would have been a staple part of the monks' diet. According to contemporary accounts this was an imposing building. Cross the road and look through the iron yett in the wall. Through this you can see the lade which powered the mill. Return to the Abbey.
